Problem description

When installing a trac one-click setup package on Dreamhost, you might encounter the error “Missing or invalid form token. Do you have cookies enabled?”. This isn’t an error that is limited to Dreamhost installations, as I have seen it crop up a bit everywhere.

This is an error in the installation of your .htaccess file. The url rewrite rules are not available for the javascript files. That is (fortunately) quite easy to solve. read more »

Facebook offers, just like Myspace in that regard, the ability to chat on their site. That’s a cool and easy way to keep in touch with your contacts as there is no software to install. However, once you start to chat quite regularly with your Facebook contacts, it becomes easy to forget to logon to facebook the moment you start up your pc.

Let’s introduce Pidgin, the multi-platform and multi-network instant messaging client. I call it multi-platform, as it works on Windows as well as UNIX-based systems such as Linux. Mac OS X support is provided by a separate tool based on the same foundations, called Adium. It supports many networks by using plugins : ICQ, AIM, Google Talk (Jabber XMPP), MSN, Novell Groupwise Chat, Skype and Gadu Gadu (a protocol very popular in Poland),  just to name a few of the most used. Pidgin was originally called ‘GAIM’, for Gnu AIM client. Some name disputes with AOL made the developers rename the project to Pidgin.

Pidgin can be configured to startup when your operating system boots, so you are available for your Facebook contacts the moment your pc has finished its startup cycle. Pidgin has support for a multitude of different networks, and if you install an extra plugin, it’s also possible to get support for Facebook messaging. Under windows, just install the plugin, and you can add your Facebook network contacts like you would add Yahoo! Messenger or MSN or Google contacts.

Next time you start up your computer, your facebook contacts will automatically be able to chat with you even when you haven’t thought about checking on the website what they have been upto. Enjoy!

Een tijdje geleden heb ik een Gravatar voor mezelf gemaakt, wat staat voor een Globally Recognised Avatar: simpel en gemakkelijk. Het concept van Gravatar en aanverwanten is dat je je op het internet met een herkenbare identiteit wil begeven, in welk forum je ook kijkt, en op welke blog je commentaar post. Op het net gebeurt dat nu meestal met een avatar: een afbeelding of foto waarmee je jezelf identificeert. Wanneer je overal dezelfde avatar wil gebruiken, betekent dat wel dat je dezelfde afbeelding moet uploaden op elke site waar je actief bent, tenzij je gebruik maakt van Gravatar.com natuurlijk. Dan kan je aan je e-mail adres een afbeelding koppelen en die op elke site vertonen die gravatar ondersteunt.

The Xoops foundation announced on October 22nd that the stable release version of Xoops 2.3 had been made available for download.

Even though this blog is running on WordPress, the Linux philosophy dictates that you need the right tool for the job. Blogging is done using WordPress, and site building is done, in my case, using the excellent Xoops. After some period of internal turmoil at the end of 2007, development seems to have picked up again, with some founding members returning to the community.

It shows. Instead of just updating the looks on some modules, the changelog is listing a lot of impressive and useful additions to the core system, both visible to end-users and some invisible ones that are there to ease module development. I’ve been trying to get the hang of module development for some weeks now (to get this DIF and DTS art site going), and I can see the additions and improvements will make my life easier, and shorten my development cycle considerably.

My verdict: Xoops is back. Development is going forward at a brisk pace, and the community seems to have stabilised. Now all that is needed are some more finished and well-maintained modules, and this will be again a system to be reckoned with.

Firefox 3 is net gereleased! Ik had me ingeschreven voor de Download Day, waar Mozilla probeert het wereldrecord ‘downloads in 24 uur’ te zetten. En zoals ik had beloofd door mijn inschrijving, ben ik nu voorbeeldig mijn bijdrage aan het doen aan de file op de downloadservers van Mozilla.
In tegenstelling met de 2.0 release is er deze keer wel een nederlandstalige download van bij het begin. Die komt wel van een server in Brazilië, maar zolang hij wil installeren heb ik daar geen probleem mee. Goede download snelheid ook, als je indenkt hoeveel mensen er op dit moment bezig zijn hun nieuwe versie FF binnen te halen.

De Download is binnen. Nu eens zien wat die FF 3.0 juist is…

Xara has been acquired by Magix AG, a leading German software distributor for video and music applications. Xara, once distributed by Corel, has been in the news for its open source version of Xara Xtreme which was struggling to gain momentum, and then eventually stopped due to lack of developer interest.
It seems the acquisition by MAGIX will provide them with more funds to further development and to make distribution of their software easier.
MAGIX is distributor of MAGIX Music Maker and MAGIX Video Deluxe 2008.

Er blijkt een probleem te zijn in de XML-RPC functionaliteit van de WordPress versie die we op dit moment gebruiker. Het probleem is nu opgelost. Meer informatie is te vinden op de WordPress site.

In een post op de website laat Tom Spinner weten dat Stage6, het door DivX beheerde web platform voor filmpjes in hoge kwaliteit in DivX formaat, zal gestopt worden op het einde van de maand. Welja, ze namen niet eens in aanmerking dat de maand dit jaar 29 dagen telt.
De reden is eenvoudig : Stage6 werd het slachtoffer van zijn eigen succes. Ik ben een DivX gebruiker en hoewel ik niets produceerde dat de moeite van het tonen aan de wereld waard was, herinner ik dat ik vele keren via Stage6 werd geleid wanneer ik trailers van films of games wilde zien. De trailer van Starcraft 2 was er daar één van.

Nu is het wel zo dat vele sites op het internet downloads aanbieden, maar je zal lang moeten zoeken vooraleer je dezelfde video kwaliteit kan vinden op dit moment. Youtube bekijk ik niet eens, de beeldkwaliteit van de meeste filpjes daar is belachelijk, doordat alles wordt gehercodeerd in Flash Video van andere formaten. Dan krijg je videos die worden afgeleverd zonder de handmatige tweaks die een DivX producent op zijn eigen computer kan doen om de kwaliteit maximaal te krijgen.

Een spijtige evolutie, maar ik verwacht dat er wel één of andere site de fakkel zal overnemen. Wanneer ik rondkijk, merk ik dat er veel video sites de boeken toedoen. Dat kan zijn dat de bandbreedte kosten de pan uitswingen door hun populariteit, of dat ze niet kunnen concurreren met de bekendste zoals Youtube (Google Video is hier een voorbeeld).
We zullen zien wat de toekomst brengt, want de laatste zin in de blog laat toch nog wat ruimte voor hoop:

De stadsbibliotheek van Izegem in België is onze eerste FONtastische openbare bibliotheek in Europa. De bibliotheekbezoekers kunnen hun laptops meebrengen, op internet surfen, en emails gratis lezen. Het FON WiFi signaal dekt de bibliotheek ingang, de leeszaal, vergaderzaal en tentoonstellingsruimte.

Privacy considerations will be very present again, as Google is bundling the different logins for its applications into a new part of their eco-system: Google Profile. It provides a way for the customers to have to maintain one profile, and be able to link from some, but in the future all, Google products.

I can see the reason for this in a service like Blogger, where your profile could be important when you post responses to a certain post, but I’m not sure about the rest of the services. Sometimes, I don’t want people to see my email, so I don’t give it. When you have it in your profile, it might prove difficult to segment what information you want to provide to whom.
